| Edward Thurlow, first Baron Thurlow (1731-1806). Educated at Seckars school,
Scarning and Kings School, Canterbury. He was the Perse Scholar at Caius
College, Cambridge, but was sent down for insulting the Dean. He became
a lawyer and soon gained a name for his skilled advocacy. Thurlow was retained
for the appellants to the Lords in the Douglas case and obtained a reversal
of the decision of the Court of Session, subsequently fighting a duel with
Andrew Stuart, the Duke of Hamilton's agent. He was appointed Attorney-General
in 1771 and took office under Pitt but then intrigued against him with the
Prince of Wales; he was obliged to resign in 1792. |
