| This medal may refer to the speech from the throne at the opening of parliament on 6th October 1796. In this speech the King repeated his 'anxious wish for an honourable peace'. With many of the ports of the continent of Europe closed against British merchandise it was generally hoped in Britain that a peace treaty would re-establish commerce and trade. It is interesting that the portrait of the King on this piece bears a marked resemblance to the late King George II. Perhaps the engraver was more familiar with the portrait of George II than that of George III. |
