It is possible that this medal refers to Fox's opposition to the proposed union with Ireland. He declared that the union was an attempt to establish the principles and practises of depotism. Fox declined to attend any debates on the question in the House and roundly condemned the Irish policy of the government. In particular he strongly disapproved of the proposal to compensate the Irish borough-holders. See also note to No. 323.
