| The town of Almaraz was the main French crossing place over the river Tagus west of Toledo and was defended by Fort Napoleon on the south side of the river and other fortified positions on the north. General Hill with three brigades of British and Portuguese infantry, a cavalry regiment and a heavy artillery battery, took these positions on the 18th and 19th May. |
