| The Allied crossing of the river Nive began at dawn on the 9th December when General Hill's corps plus the cavalry and artillery waded across three fords in the vincinity of Cambo. General Beresford with the 3rd and 6th Divisions crossed the river over pontoon bridges further north. The crossing of the river was on a five mile front and the French, unable to withstand the onslaught, retreated towards Bayonne. |
