To avoid being outflanked. Marshal Soult retreated to a series of ridges behind the town of Orthez and General Hill was ordered to hold his attention there while other Allied divisions crossed the Gare de Pau river further to the west. When General Hill saw that this crossing had been made, he himself crossed the river two miles upstream, thus capturing the town. The French losses at Orthez amounted to 4,000 men, the Allied losses were 2,164.
