| This is a bit of an interesting coin. At first I thought that it was from
the Roman Republic which dated from February 15, 1798 to September 29, 1799.
The Répertoire des Monnaies Napoléonides that I have
shows similar coins for Rome and Perugia but they are from a year later
and have no dates. The book doesn't indicate any other cities having produced
5 baiocchi coins, but I saw a badly damaged example of this coin that a
dealer could not date because of the damage. However he said it was 1799
and stated that the coin was struck by the city of Fermo. |

| The Copper Coinage of the Papal States,
No. 812, p. 25. The description
there says: |
| 5 baiocchi ("Madonnina") 1797-98. Obv., PIVS PAPA SEXTVS
. ANNO XXIII, date. In the field, BAIOC | CHI | CINQVE. Rev., SANCTA
DEI GENITRIX. Bust of the Madonna to left. |
| Most of the above described 2½ and 5 baiocchi coins show
the die sinker's initials T .M. (TOMASO MERCANDETTI) under the
busts. |
