Of more interest than may be obvious at first this little medal celebrates a marriage that is of great interest to beer drinkers everywhere. The three-day public celebrations held in a meadow near Munich proved to be so popular that it has been celebrated ever since under the name of Oktoberfest.
Ludwig I was the grandfather of the infamous "mad" King Ludwig II, builder of the fairy castle of Neuschwanstein and center of a suicide / homicide that is discussed to this day.
Ludwig I himself was forced to abdicate in favor of his son during the Revolution of 1848 in part because of his relationship with the adventurer Lola Montez.
