This poor thing needed a home! Badly struck it is actually easier to see details on the picture than on the actual coin! There seems to have been an abortive attempt at holing the coin near 6 o'clock on the reverse. You can see the distorted metal at the same position on the obverse. Yup, it appears to have been struck medal style but being unfamiliar with Turkish money I'm not sure if that was common. Anyway, the would be jeweler must have gotten a clear look at the coin and changed their mind.
Krause says this is made of .465 silver but personally I wouldn't believe it. No wonder Maria Teresa thalers were so popular! The dealer's flip it came in had a problem with the dates. It says that it dates from 1800-01. But it also says that it is from year 7 of Selim III (1789-1807), which would put it around 1796. I don't read Arabic so I can't say for sure. I do love a coin with some history!
