Ratisbonne, the wounding of Napoleon

Napoleon wounded

I found this wonderful print at the annual Napoleonic auction at the Napoleonic Society's Conference in New Orleans. The colors were so vivid I couldn't take my eyes off it. I also have a story that connects this print to my life somewhat. It goes as follows;

In the early 90's I was visiting my family in the Czech Republic for a month (long story, even longer commute). One day I was with my daughters in Linz, Austria buying a computer when I was informed that I needed to kill about 10 hours while the computer store configured the computer. Looking at my Michelin guide I realized I was about 150 miles from the battlefields around Landshut and Ratisbonne (now Regensburg). I decided to try to see Eckmuhl and Ratisbonne. I blasted up the Autobahn at outrageous speeds (and getting passed by irate old ladies!), passed Passau and got to Eckmuhl around lunch.

We left there and followed the Michelin guide to Ratisbonne. The one real mention of Napoleon was of a monument commemorating his wounding marking the spot where he stopped to get it dressed. So you can see my interest in this print! The guide said to go opposite the cathedral to find the monument. The cathedral was easy. The monument wasn't there...

So, we split up and went up and down narrow streets, reading many plaques and monuments in many languages, but not a single mention of Napoleon. I had just about resigned myself to either not finding it or convincing myself that a Habsburg fountain had something to do with it when one of my daughters shouted from over at the cathedral and pointed above my head.

Three floors up, on the side of a building (and painted over) was a plaque! Granted, it was a big plaque, but it sure wasn't a monument in my eyes...

If you pass your mouse over parts of the picture you'll see that it has hot links to show more detail.

possibly Marshal Lannes possibly General d'Espagne... Roustam, the Mameluke valet... Napoleon and his doctor... Napoleon and his doctor...
