Francis Henry Egerton (1758-1829) succeeded his brother as eighth Earl of Bridgewater in 1823. He was educated at Eton, Christ Church and All Souls College, Oxford and was appointed Prebendary of Durham in 1780. He died unmarried in February 1829 when the title became extinct. In his will Bridgewater left £8,000 for the best work on 'The Goodness of God as manifested in the Creation'.
   This medal is one of the Durand series of celebrated men of all countries, issued between 1820 and 1846. It was struck in France and is included here for the sake of completeness.
