Following the French withdrawal from Ciudad Rodrigo, the bulk of the Allied army was able to retire into winter quarters for three months' rest. General Hill, in command of the southern army, decided to make a sudden advance into Spain south of the river Tagus before settling for the winter. By a series of hard marches and skilful manoeuvres, Hill was able to destroy a French force of 2,500 at Arroyo del Molinos returning with 1,300 prisoners and at a cost of just over 100 of the Anglo-Portuguese force.
