Comments. Robert Campin was a haberdasher in business in Goat Lane, Norwich. In the eighteenth century the most curious combinations of trades took place, and as knives and forks were becoming fashionable, having been introduced into England by refugees from the revolution in France, Campin may well have invested in a stock to sell as a sideline.
The following year Campin issued another token with a different obverse; the stocking is ribbed and the upper part doubled back, and the knife and fork are crossed the other way. The reverse is dated 1794. [This is that version.]
Common.
The diesinker of these tokens is unknown and Kempson only manufactured a small quantity, some other person striking most of them.
