BELL

No 4 D&H 21

BUNGAY Prentice (2). Delf & Abel.
Obverse :- Justice mounted on a pedestal with a sword in her right hand and scales in her left, between crossed laurel and palm branches. Legend :- FOR THE USE OF TRADE.
Reverse :- A hand with a frilled wristband holding a scroll inscribed in indented lettering: WE PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND ONE HALFPENNY Legend :- BUNGAY 1795
Edge :- S. PRENTICE S. DELL M. ABEL (SIC). Some specimens have been corrected to S. DELF
Diesinker, Arnold; manufacturer, Lutwyche. Five cwts. struck. Common.

Comments. The token appears to have been used by three traders in the town. Samuel Prentice was a freeholder, grocer and chandler in Bungay. Samuel Delf was a freeholder, whitesmith and brazier; Maithias Abel. Sen., a freeholder, grocer and draper.

The representation of Justice on a pedestal is better than is usually found on tokens. The reverse is effective and utilitarian.
