   Obverse :- Male bust in military costume and a cocked hat. The Royal Cypher G. R. on the epaulet. Legend :- CHARLES MARQUIS C0RNWALLIS with three small trefoil ornaments at its termination.
   Reverse :- Fame with wings expanded, standing in flowing robes amidst trophies of war and holding to her mouth a trumpet. In her right hand is a wreath, with an irradiation above it. Legend :- HIS FAME RESOUNDS FROM EAST TO WEST

Comments. Philip Deck was a freeholder and bookseller in Crown Street, and also the Postmaster of Bury, otherwise Bury St. Edmunds.
   Charles, Marquis Cornwallis, was born at Brome Hall, Suffolk, in 1738. He was engaged in the American War, and from 1786 to 1792 was Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces in India. He was created a Marquis for his victory over Tippoo Sultan and also received the appointment of Master-General of Ordinance. He later become Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and was the British signatory at the Peace of Amiens in 1801. In 1804 he was again appointed Governor General of India, but died there soon after arrival.
