Vern's Comments:

>This piece is made of billon, an alloy of primarily copper and a small amount of silver. Early in its life it would have been quite silver in appearance; the remains of the wash showing up between the letters and around the tail of the lion. The 1806 example, though a bit porous, has virtually all of its silvering.
