Paris Medal Mint
On the 11th Frimaire, year XIII. (2nd December, 1804), the ceremony of the coronation took place in the church of Notre Dame at Paris. The Pope blessed Napoleon and Josephine in the presence of the princes of the Imperial house, the members of the sacred college, the prelates of France, and the various other orders of the state; the corps diplomatique, and a deputation from the Italian republic were also present. Hardly had the pontiff consecrated the crown when Napoleon seized it, put it himself on his own head, and then crowned the Empress.
Medals of four different sizes were struck on this occasion: the largest were given in gold or silver to those who assisted at the ceremony, and the smallest were thrown among the people by the heralds-at-arms. The latter were struck in such numbers as to require the employment of several dies.
