The Gentleman's Magazine for May, 1816, records 'Early this morning (Tuesday, April 23rd, 1816) a fire broke out in a bed-room of the Coffee-house over the Old Stock Exchange, at the corner of Swithins (Sweetings) Alley, close to the north-east corner of the Royal Exchange. The fire soon communicated to every part of the building, in which, at the bottom, were an Auction Mart, and a large Wine-company, and above stairs the Coffee-house and several counting houses, all of which are entirely consumed.'
