The town of Malton is 22 miles NE of York. It developed from a large Roman camp of Agricolan foundation, which was occupied into the fourth century and seems to have been part of a much larger complex. It had a norman castle which was destroyed in the time of Henry II. In the reign of Stephen it was occupied by the Scots and burned down by Thurston, archbishop of York, and on being rebuilt was known as New Malton.
The town had iron and brass foundries, agricultural implements works, corn mills, tanneries, and breweries. There were lime and whinstone quarries in the area.
