Progress continues. The Napoleon Medals is an extremely rare and unfortunately rapidly deteriorating book. I'm reluctant to handle it too much and is of such a large format that I was forced to innovate the scanning process. His subsequent catalogue of the British Museum is actually a bitchfest (technical term) about the medals he determined were missing from the Museum.

Internal software documentation. Minor tweaks and additional fields are planned in the next few days so I decided to stop relying on my decaying memory to know where to start.
The Unknown button at the bottom of the legend is just that - despite my best efforts I can't identify it, or even date it. In the case of the current candidate I'm fairly certain it predates 1832, engraved by J.P. Droz, is French, but that's it.

Between D&H and Bell they spelled this token as either from Hawkeurst [on the token] or Hawkhurst. Another problematic set of descriptions since Bell often copied errors in D&H and then introduced his own errors. Both probably had printing deadlines.

Queen Caroline was probably the worst possible match for the already married Prince Regent to commit bigamy with. She left England to get away from him and only returned when his allies forced a Divorce Bill into Parliaments' agenda. She returned to defend herself (she was actually guilty), the event this medal celebrates, and was subsequently acquitted. So, a lot like our politics today.

An incredibly thick (5mm!) and therefore heavy, original medal. I guess Louis XVIII had Napoleon envy so he "restored" the Museum, though it doesn't mention which one.
- 1814 Battle of Brienne, Prussia/Württemberg
A beautiful medal featuring an unusual obverse subject from an uncommon place, Württemburg.
- 1788 Centenary of the Revolution - (Davis), Great Britain
So, the French Revolution hadn't started yet and Brits decided just to poke various folks in the eye by celebrating the centenary of getting rid of their Catholic monarchy and replacing it with a Protestant one. An interesting scalloped edge piece.
- 1795 ½ Penny - (Lowestoft), England

- c. 1810 Honor the Ladies!, Prussia
A Loos piece that for no discernable reason was deemed a Masonic medal by Marvin himself. It does have some masonic symbolism on it but no Lodge. I'm fairly certain that Schiller, who is quoted, was a Mason. I need to find my Merzdorf and research further.
- 1804 William Betty, Great Britain
The second of this medal onsite.
- c. 1803 (1848) Confirmation or Communion Medal, Prussia
I purchased this piece from a very knowledable dealer who dated the engraving to circa 1803. It was used in 1848 and from its condition loved for generations.

- 1808 1 Franc (La Rochelle), France
A semi-cull from a scarce mint.
- 1795 Cheapest Booksellers in the World halfpenny, Great Britain
An edge variant of an otherwise identical coin onsite.
- c. 1795 ½ Penny - (Hornchurch), England
- 1792 Election of Francis II as Roman Emperor in Frankfurt, Austria
- 1815 Reddition de Lyon (variant), France
This is a fun variant of this medal. The reverse on this example names Frimont as a Field Marshall which he was at the time. At the same time he was becoming a Baron of Austria and this is reflected in the second line of the reverse where the lettering reflects this honor. What I suspect is this particular example was struck, the promotion was pointed out and remaining strikes have the changes noted in the references. So this could be unique or part of a very limited striking.
- 1808 2 Francs, France
It's a cull, but 2 franc pieces are relatively scarce and it fills a hole in the collection.
- 1813 20 Kreutzer (Vienna), Austria

- 1809 Rome réuni à la France (Depaulis), France
I think I'll just let people look. Very high relief medal on both sides.

- 1812 1 shilling token, Great Britain
Dalton's book on Silver tokens of 1811-1812 mentions several varieties, particularly of the reverse.
- 1825 Coronation of Charles X, France
Tossed to the crowd either before or after the coronation.
- 1796 Société de médecine de Paris, France
Probably should be dated sometime between 1880 and 1930 but done in the style of an original.

I've spent the past few days using my new CZUR scanner to begin scanning all of my commonly used reference books. To be clear I own all of these books and none are being scanned with an intention of selling copies. Most are rare books and continued handling is reducing their lifetimes.
So far I've scanned:
- BHM
- Bramsen
- Hennin
- Milan
I plan on scanning, in the near future:
- D'Essling
- DeCoster
- Marvin
- Millin

- 1804 Le Couronnement à Paris (variant), France
These brass medals or jetons were produced in a wide variety. This is an unlisted variant that resembles Bramsen 323.
- 1802 Thirteenpence token, Great Britain
Heavily worn, relatively scarce, definitely an odd denomination for a Conder token.
- 1793 Birth of Archduke Ferdinand, Austria
This is an example of a trial strike in tin. It's not in my usual references but is noted in a book about medals related to Emperor Ferdinand I as the first medal struck with him as the subject. The obverse featured his parents.
- 1799 Earl Spencer, First Lord of the Admiralty, Great Britain
- 1810 ½ Kreuzer, Baden
- 1813 ½ Kreuzer, Nassau-Weilbourg
- 1811 1/6 Thaler, Prussia
- 1801 Tribute to the 42nd Regiment from the London Highland Society, Great Britain
A modern copy of a famous medal that never was.
- 1820 Death of the Duke de Berry, France
The medal came to me pre-damaged.
- 1815 The Imperial Family, France

- 1796 (c.1830) Societas Pharmceutica Parisiensis, France
- 1815 Visit of Alexander I to Munich, Russia
- 1801 Preliminaries of Peace with France, Great Britain
Another sixth example of an incredibly common medal.
- 1814 Peace of Paris, Prussia
One of six (yikes!) I have in my collection. Some pieces, like this, are so common you shouldn't spend more than $15 for a decent one.
- 1801 Union of Ireland with Great Britain, Great Britain
- 1812 First prize for writing, City of Douai, France
Beautiful, though I couldn't find any ifo on the winner.
- 1798 Kempson's Calendar Medal, Great Britain
Except for the dates and the hole this is identical to the 1808 that follows.
- 1808 Kempson's Calendar Medal, Great Britain
These were evidently used by both sexes and provided calendar information such as "when is the next full moon?" Nice to know if you're a werewolf or vampire for instance.
- 1805 Visit of the Pope to the Mint, France
A beat up example struck in tin.

- c. 1820 Society of Sciences, Arts, and Fine Letters of Mâcon, France
An unlisted medal, at least in my references so it could date 1814 or 1815-1824.
- 1811 George, Prince of Wales, appointed Regent, Great Britain
- 1873 Monument of the Battle of Buçaco and the Peninsular War, Portugal
Not many Portuguese medals onsite. This one dates to 60 years after the fact and probably is more of a "We love our (then) dear Leader" than anything to do with honoring the campaigners who were in their 90s or dead.
- 1817 Celebration of the 300th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation (Saxony), German States
There's a remarkable variety of these, I like the obverse imagery on this one.
- 1791 30 Sols - Limoges (Dupre), France
This is an unusual coin in that it appears to be a normal issue for France in 1791 but isn't listed in Hennin. Didn't expect that, should list around H. 330 and resembles besides the dates, H. 415.
- 1795 Cheapest Booksellers in the World halfpenny, Great Britain

- 1791 2 Sols - Paris, France
- 1814 Betrothal of Princess Charlotte, Great Britain
- 1811 The Lines of Torres Vedras and the English Army on the Tagus, Great Britain
Number 17 in the great Mudie series, actually issued around 1820.
- 1801 Death of Gabriel Ahlman, Assessor, Sweden
I know nothing about this gentleman but like I've said before, I'll collect anything from the period!
- 1817 Obsequies for Princess Charlotte, Great Britain
- 1812 L'aigle française sur le Wolga, France
- 1806 Death of William Pitt, Great Britain
- 1788 Charles Jean-Baptiste des Galois de la Tour, France
During the leadup to the Revolution almost all of France were involved in meetings to decide what the various classes would talk to the King about. After all it had been hundreds of years since an Etats General.
- 1799 5 Centimes, France

- c. 1740s Freemason's Ducat, Belgium
This could have been struck at any point in the past three centuries. It's sort of a generic Freemason's medal that might have originated in Brussels, or Berlin or outer space... It's a bit fuzzy.
- 1827 Obsequies for the Duke of York, Great Britain
- 1812 Napoleon`s Retreat from Russia, France
- 1798 Action off Tory Island, Great Britain
Basically during the wars if you fought the French and didn't lose someone would issue medals in your honor. In this case we don't even know the engraver! The French have their own views on the action, check out a translation of the text under the Hennin listing.
- 1805 Te Deum at St. Stephen`s Cathedral, Vienna, France
- 1852 Death of the Duke of Wellington, Great Britain
I collect virtually anything from a nearly 100 year span. That is, from the coronation of George III to the death of Wellington. So this little piece is at the far end of that period. I just lied online. I will collect outside the period particularly if it relates to Napoleon. (see By Year->1816 - Present)

Have you ever spent an inordinate amount of time futzing with something no one else will probably ever see much less use? Yeah, that's my day so far. Playing with the data entry screen for the coin and medal database that powers much of what you see. :P
09/18/25
Much of today has been spent adding fields to the database as well as working in the weeds to be able to enter and then use those fields. Probably won't enter coins as quickly as I have been as I work out this stuff.

- 1797 Foundation of the Cisalpine Republic, Cisalpine Republic
This one took awhile longer than most. It's a beauty and also one of only a couple of "Brasseux" examples I own. After the wars were over the Bourbons confiscated all of the Empires' dies from the Mint with the intention of no longer allowing them to be struck for collectors. However the Mint didn't own all of the dies, people such as Brasseux owned quite a few, oddly stored at the Mint who would obligingly strike up an example for a fee. At some point around 1830 he came to the conclusion that collectors had no way to tell his copies from those struck earlier, say 1797. So he asked the Mint to edgemark the new ones with COPIE.

- 1807 Battle of Eylau, France
- 1804 1/6 Thaler, Brunswick - Wolfenbuttel
- 1814 Celebrations for the signing of the Peace of Paris, Great Britain
- 1794 ½ Penny - Whale Fishery, Great Britain
- 1807 2/3 Taler, Brunswick-Luneburg
- 1794 ½ Penny - Staplehurt, Great Britain
- 1792 The United French are Invincible, France
The Monneron Brothers were among several French businessmen producing the Gallic answer to Conder Tokens. And for similar reasons, lack of small change for everyday transactions. These guys took it a bit further, actually going to England to the Soho mint to have them produced. Pretty gutsy considering the two countries were at war at the time.
- 1814 Première entrée de Louis XVIII à Paris, France
- 1802 Réunion da Piémont à la France, France
- c. 1801 Honor thy Father and thy Mother, German States
Loos of course. Moses is pointing at the 4th commandment but the legend is the 5th.
- 1805 Death of Lord Nelson, Great Britain
The obverse is a case study of why you store your collection in archival safe materials. Strangely beautiful though.

- 1789 King George III; Restored from Illness, Great Britain
- 1809 Dourdan - Société du Parterre, France
This piece was surprisingly not listed in the usual references.
- 1805 Death of Reverend James Wilkinson, Great Britain
- 1792 Adoption of the French Republican Calendar, France
I forgot I had already bought this example and that's when I bought the one I put up on 9/13 (see below). I'm getting old.
- 1810 Joesph Hanson, Great Britain
A medal issued in support of Joesph Hanson, jailed because of his support of the Luddites.
- 1805 1 Gröschel, Silesia
- 1795 Constitutional Medal, Great Britain
Do NOT let the title fool you! This is a great medal, one where each side would make me want to collect it.
- 1811 Cornish Penny (Modern copy), Great Britain
A tourist coin! A decent copy though in hand there's little chance you'd realize that. A good reference such as British Copper Tokens 1811-1820 let me know that originals had milled edges.
- 1804 4th Anniversary of Napoleon`s Consulat (Andrieu), France
A remarkably rare medal or pattern that mentions yet another date system! At this point in time France used the Revolutionary calendar, the Gregorian (unofficially) and the Consulate calendar (this one!)

- 1815 Louis XVII honors Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette (Andrieu), France
This piece suffers from heavy environmental damage. It does show you can still collect an original for $29 USD though!
- 1801 Charles Michel L'Epee (Duvivier), France
- c. 1801 To Merit its Crowns, German States
Loos! And visual proof I don't clean my medals or coins.
- 1793 Success to the Yorkshire Woollen Manufactory, Great Britain
- c. 1801 Friendship and love, German States
Loos! And visual proof I don't clean my medals or coins.
- 1827 Memorial to George Canning, France
Struck in France, in French, honoring Canning (a British politician) on the occaison of his passing.
- 1802 Compagne d'assurances du Havre, France
In case you thought insurance companies are something new. Each side features a ship, the reverse making the pitch for insurance.
- c. 1801 Like the sun..., German States
Another Loos! I took an over 10 year hiatus from updating this website dealing with mental health issues but never stopped collecting. Obviously I got fascinated with Loos. :)
- 1795 Death of Louis XVI, France
This is an unlisted medal. That's almost unbelievable after 230 years but I absolutely believe it to be an original and contemporary strike.

1808 1/6 Rigsdaler, Denmark
Sort of a voluntary contribution to the Fatherland. You gave something tangible, probably silver, that was then turned into spendable coin. Not quite a war bond since you didn't get the coins to spend yourself. Want to support the war effort? Give us money then.
